For my first EVER blog, I have managed to do a lot of procrastination as to what I would write about.. I can assure you the choices were a plenty and my house is now so clean because every time I sat down to write, I would be conveniently reminded of that particularly dusty shelf in the spare room that desperately needed my attention more than this blog. But alas I now don’t have ANY more shelves to dust or floors to mop so here I am.
The benefit of my unwanted desire to clean the ‘nooks and crannies’ of my house is that it has inspired me to talk about the need for cleansing our body, and in particular the importance of regular supported detoxification.
What is detoxification?
Well simply put it is the cornerstone of health. Detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from the body and it involves neutralizing toxins through the liver and facilitating their removal via elimination channels eg. Faeces, urine and sweat. Detoxification isn’t something you only do now and then. It is in fact something that happens in your body on an ongoing basis in order to minimize the damage from any harmful substances you encounter and eliminate them from your system.
Sources of toxins in Australia
Whilst the human body has a natural capacity to process toxins, today's polluted environment may overburden the natural detoxification processes, especially when combined with endogenous toxins that are created due to poor dietary and lifestyle habits. It would be safe to say that in the modern world, toxic load is even more important than nutritional deficiencies in terms of disease states. Some of the frequent sources of toxins include:

Detox for health
By detoxing appropriately, you should reduce the toxic load on your body by adopting a clean, healthy lifestyle and eating fresh organic foods packed with free radical-fighting antioxidants. You should also make use of specific foods, herbs and nutrients that support and enhance the functioning of your body’s organs of elimination. A four step program is recommended.
Reduce toxic accumulation
Support the bowel and other channels of elimination
Aid liver detoxification
Repair and regenerate the body
Tips to support your detox
Detox in Spring and Autumn so that the impact of extreme weather temperatures don’t stress your body whilst working hard to eliminate toxins.
Incorporate gentle exercise such as yoga, walking and pilates to support digestion and elimination.
Skin brushing with a natural loofa before you shower or bath helps toxin removal by improving circulation and stimulating the lymphatic system.
Swedish massage to stimulate lymph flow and assist in the removal of fluid and wastes
Saunas are not just a great way to relax, they also promote sweating, which in turn enhances detoxification. Not recommended if you have high blood pressure of course and be sure to consult your health professional if you have any other health concerns.
Epsom salt baths encourage the elimination of toxins through the skin. Not recommended if you have eczema or high blood pressure.
Everybody varies in their ability to process and eliminate toxins and in how toxins impact their health so it is important to make sure you seek the help of a qualified health professional for a specific, individually designed program including supportive herbs, nutrients and diet suggestions.
